Se refiere a la posibilidad de modificar el firmware para cargar software casero con acceso al hardware, algo que desde el linux ultracapado que tiene la PS3 no es posible. El firmware (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware) es el sistema operativo básico de la PS3, que va instalado en su memoria interna. A este firmware se le aplica un checksum (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checksum), que es algo así como el digito de control de los número de cuenta bancaria, para garantizar que es correcto y no se ha modificado. Lo que aqui dice es que han hallado la forma de poner el checksum correcto aun habiendo modificado el firmware.
