When Kumari herself is bleeding, because of loss of theeth or injuries, or when she reaches puberty, she cannot represent the goddes any longer, and a new Kumari has to be found.
Above all, the kumari must not bleed. It’s believed that the spirit of the goddess, the shakti, that enters the girl’s body when she becomes a kumari, will leave her if she loses any blood. Even an accidental graze could end her reign. A living goddess is always dismissed when she gets her first period.

A Nepali Kumari is believed to be the living incarnation of the goddess Taleju The Kathmandu Kumarialso known as Durga. This continues until after menstruation when the goddess Taleju vacates her body. Illness and loss of blood due to injury can also mean the goddess leaves the girls body.
She leaves only for ceremonial occasions a few times each year and remains the Kumari until she experiences a serious loss of blood or her first period.
