El descubrimiento de una montaña de plata en 1570 (junto con un nuevo método de extraerlo) transformó está remota ciudad inca en el centro económico del imperio español, más grande en aquellos tiempos que Londres, Milán o Sevilla. Hasta que la plata se agotó. Potosí es la primera ciudad del capitalismo porque facilitó abundantemente el principal ingrediente del capitalismo: dinero.
