17 de julio de 1959. Billie Holiday fallece por cirrosis hepática en un hospital de Nueva York a los 44 años. En ese momento, la cantante estaba bajo custodia policial por posesión de narcóticos, un crimen en la América republicana de Eisenhower. Tenía 70 centavos de dólar en el banco. Arruinada, enferma y sola, así abandonó Eleanora Fagan Gough (como se llamaba) sus días de desenfreno en la meca del jazz.
