Desde hace siglos, en medio de las peores tormentas en el mar, los marinos han invocado a San Telmo, su patrón, para evitar los peligros de un naufragio. La aparición en los mástiles de un misterioso brillo azul o violeta que a veces tenía apariencia de chorros de fuego era interpretado como un buen augurio enviado por el santo en respuesta a sus oraciones, muy probablemente porque el fenómeno suele ocurrir hacía la parte final de las tormentas.
